Red Bordeaux blends (known as Claret in Britain) are known for their powerful structure and deep flavours. Dark fruits and berries such as plum and blackcurrant are commonly used to describe their cascading flavours. There are five red grapes that make up the components of a red Bordeaux blend, these are Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot are the leading grapes in the wine and the other three support them adding colour, structure and body in varying amounts. Typically, a Bordeaux blend uses at least three of the five grapes and each year the percentages of each grape in the blend differ and can include more of a certain variety in each vintage.
