Zinfandel is a variety of red grape that calls California home. Known for its firm tannin and propensity toward high alcohol, Zinfandel vines produce dark grapes, with a deep-purple colour. Wines made from Zinfandel often have concentrated fruit character of raspberries or blackberries, alongside notes of licorice and pepper. Oak ageing is often required to soften the wine, smooth the hard tannins and add balance. In Italy the grape is known as Primitivo.
