Bordeaux is arguably the most famous wine region in the world and it is located in the South West of France. The region is centred on the city of Bordeaux and covers the whole area of the Gironde department of Aquitaine. The region is home to over 10,000 vineyards with over 120,500 hectares covered in vines, making Bordeaux four times bigger than Burgundy and the second largest wine region in the world. The success of Bordeaux as a wine region is closely related to its climate which is ideal for viticulture. Its warm summers and mild winters are perfect conditions, especially for the late ripening grape varieties. Bordeaux has 57 appellations and each is governed by Appellation Origine Controlée (AOC). AOC status is only officially recognised after tasting and analysis, ensuring that wines originate from a specific region or area and meet the strict norms of local production.
