Reverdito

Michele Reverdito’s vines are on the road that connects La Morra with Verduno in Northern Itlay. That, admittedly, is a less famous part of town than the part along the road to Barolo, but Signor Reverdito makes up for the lesser notoriety of his vineyards with a meticulous viticulture, a very late harvest, and a purity of traditional cellar technique that results in spectacularly fragrant, dark, deep Barolos. Hand-harvested, his fruit is fermented in temperature controlled stainless without the addition of yeasts or enzymes. It is then aged in traditional 1,000 litre barrels, none of them new.

Piedmont

Tucked away in north-west Italy just south of the city of Turin lies the treasured wine region of Piedmont, which boasts the highest number of quality DOC and DOCG regions in Italy. Surrounded by mountains and hills on nearly all sides, Piedmont has its own micro-climate, with long hot summers followed by wet autumns and cold, foggy winters. Piedmont is known for wines made in a diverse range of styles. Finicky, tannic Nebbiolo is at the heart of the region and the famous villages of Barolo and Barbaresco make the finest examples of this long-lived red, with its tarry, floral character. Barbera, the most planted variety in the region, has abundant cherry flavours and fresh acidity, while the aromatic, crisp Gavi, a white wine made from the normally unheralded Cortese grape, comes to life in Piedmont. The runaway success story of recent times in Piedmont is sweetish, low-alcohol Moscato d'Asti, with a light sparkle and aromatic character.

Barolo

The Barolo region is nestled in the Apennine Mountains, southwest of the town of Alba. The wine is affectionately referred to as the ‘King of Wines’ and the ‘Wine of Kings’ because it is one of the great wines of the world. Nebbiolo is the only grape variety permitted in the Barolo DOCG and it is a light coloured, full flavoured red wine with cherry, rose, anise and mineral character with notable high acidity, high tannin that has the ability to improve and soften in the bottle and develop complex leather, mushroom, forest floor and tobacco characters over many years. The region is spread over eleven communes and lies in a horseshoe-shaped valley with steep south facing vineyards which absorb maximum sunshine to ripen the grapes. There are different styles of Barolo depending on the specific terroir and certain sites produce better wines than others.

Nebbiolo

Nebbiolo is an Italian red grape, predominantly grown in the Piedmont region of Northern Italy where it is used to make the DOCG wines of Barolo and Barbaresco, among others. Nebbiolo produces lightly coloured wines, which have good levels of tannin and acidity, making many require extended ageing to develop the required balance between tannin and fruit. They have a characteristic floral aroma, and can develop notes of herbs, cherries, raspberries, truffles and dried fruits, particularly in older wines.
