Chateau Langoa-Barton

Chateau Langoa Barton was the first of two Bordeaux wine estates bought in Saint-Julien by the Barton family in the 1820s. The Chateau has 20 hectares of vineyards made up of 71% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Merlot and 8% Cabernet Franc. The vineyards lie on soil made up of gravelly clay which provides excellent drainage. The wines are vinified and matured in exactly the same way as at Chateau Leoville Barton, but it is the soils and exposure of the vineyards that cause the variations between the wines.

Bordeaux

Undoubtedly the most well-known fine wine region on the planet, the French wine region of Bordeaux spans 120,000 hectares of vineyard and is demarcated by the Gironde Estuary and its two main tributaries, the Garonne and the Dordogne. The region is divided into the Left Bank, for vineyards located on the left bank of the Garonne River, and the Right Bank, for vineyards on the right bank of the Dordogne. Famous Left Bank appellations such as Pauillac, Saint-Julien, Saint-Estephe and Margaux are well-known for their quality, but value is also found in Haut-Medoc and Moulis. The Right Bank is well known for Pomerol and Saint-Emilion, while the upcoming regions of Lalande-de-Pomerol and Cotes de Bordeaux Castillon should not be overlooked. Close to the city Sauternes and Barsac make some of the world's best sweet wines, while the appellations of Pessac-Leognan and Graves do a fine line in rich reds and full-bodied whites. Red Bordeaux wines are made from a blend of grapes, and the permitted varieties are Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and, less commonly, Malbec and Carmenere. Very broadly speaking, Right Bank wines will have a predominance of Merlot, while Left Bank wines will rely on Cabernet Sauvignon as the primary variety in a blend. White wines, both dry and sweet, are made from Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon and Muscadelle.

Saint-Julien

Small and perfectly formed, Saint-Julien boasts more Cru Classe vineyards than anywhere else in Bordeaux. Nestled next to the prestigious commune of Pauillac, Saint-Julien does not have a first growth but it is home to 11 other classed growth estates, including five second growths. Many of the estates are close to the river, around the village of Saint-Julien-Beychevelle, and make good use of the free-draining alluvial gravels which allow the vines to produce rich, densely flavoured fruit. Further away from the river, toward the village of St-Laurent, the wines are less delicate but still of excellent quality. Cabernet Sauvignon is the dominant variety used in the blended red wines of Saint-Julien and the appellation often wins praise for the delicate balance the wines achieve, combining the powerful, striking boldness of Pauillac with the more refined and sophisticated sensibilities of Margaux. Long-lived wines are the norm, and as they age they mature into gentle, refined, well-rounded wines of beautiful character.

Bordeaux Red Blend

Red Bordeaux wines are most often made from a blend of grapes, officially Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Malbec and Carmenere. The term is now used across the world to emulate the style of the famous blended wines of Bordeaux, and will be made in the same style in the majority of examples. When very broadly referring to Bordeaux wines, Left Bank wines will have a higher proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon, while Right Bank wines use Merlot as the dominant partner in the blend.
