Bodegas Catena: Nicolás Catena Zapata 2015 and 2016

Bodegas Catena: Nicolás Catena Zapata 2015 and 2016

Founded in 1902, Bodegas Catena Zapata is one of the best (if not the best) producers in Argentina, known for its pioneering role in resurrecting Malbec and placing it on the world map. The iconic Nicolás Catena has now passed the reigns over to his daughter, Laura, who has the same drive and dedication to produce world class wines.

"It was Nicolás Catena who thrust Argentinian wine into the modern era. A widely travelled academic economist, he learned from his exposure in the 1970s both to great Bordeaux and the huge promise of Napa wines."  Decanter Wine Legends

We are delighted to have secured a small allocation of the 2015 and 2016 vintage and at this price we are the best value on the market. Both wines have great critic scores.

"A giant. Not only in Argentina’s strong suit in terms of power, it also shows finesse and aromatic complexity. There are all manner of blackberries, smoke, chocolate and spicy notes. Built on a panoramic scale, but full of energy and enormous refinement. The finish cascades on and on. A blend of 83% cabernet sauvignon and 17% malbec. Try in 2021."

96/100 points. James Suckling

"Bright ruby-red. Pungent aromas of cassis, blackberry, herbs and grapefruit are pure and unadorned. Juicy and stylish in a European style, conveying an impression of delicacy and terrific penetration. This is sweeter and suppler than the 2015 Nicasia Vineyard Malbec but I`m not sure that it's deeper. Finishes with a powerful spine, strong supporting acidity and terrific length."

94/100 points. Stephen Tanzer (Vinous)

"The 2015 is higher in Cabernet Sauvignon, which represents 83% of the final blend, while Malbec comprises the remaining 17%. It feels quite ripe, with notes of cherries and an earthy touch. It`s juicy and soft, very approachable, even though it has the Cabernet's textbook tannins. Drink 2019-2023."

93/100 points. Luis Gutiérrez (Wine Advocate)

Nicolás Catena Zapata 2016

"This a rich and flavorful red, showing blackcurrants and tobacco. Full-bodied, soft and fruity with bright and spicy, oyster-shell and fresh-herb character. Serious cabernet blend. Drink or hold."

95/100 points. James Suckling

"This is backward, serious and austere, with terrific balance and great length. This is a blend of 61% Cabernet Sauvignon from Gualtallary and 31% Malbec from Nicasia. There is also some 8% Cabernet Franc that seems to add a touch, and in 2016, it didn't need irrigation because there was enough rain. This seems to follow the style of the 2013, a little tight, perhaps because of the Cabernets. This is nuanced and complex, with very good integration of the varieties and the oak, fruit, acidity and mineral texture. One of the best vintages for this bottling. Drink 2020-2026."

96/100 points. Luis Gutiérrez (Wine Advocate)
