Bordeaux En Primeur 2017: D'Yquem Shines Bright

Bordeaux En Primeur 2017: D'Yquem Shines Bright

Our final day in Bordeaux tasting the Bordeaux 2017 En Primeur wines.  It’s been a good week.  The Bordelais have been very hospitable.  Our tasting team, once again memorable for their passion and dedication.  It’s always good to get an international mix of people together to share the weeks highs and lows.

Friday morning started with a glorious sunrise and blue skies as we packed our bags before heading to Chateau Quintus, situated close to Canon and Angelus. Quintus was bought by Robert de Luxembourg (owner of Haut Brion & La Mission Haut Brion) in 2009. They are charming wines, however, in terms of value there are better options like Canon or La Marzelle, which will probably be half the price.

From Quintus we headed all the way to Chateau D’Yquem in Sauternes. D’Yquem is mind-blowingly good, gorgeous viscosity and seamless balance. It is close in quality to the stunning 2001, with slightly less acidity. Full notes to follow when we write our report.

The sun was still shining when we arrived at Pape Clement, with a dreamy 20c.

We started with the Pape Clement and then second wines before moving onto Bernard Magrez’s other wines. La Tour Carnet was showing really well, Fombrauge had good balance, though a little over powering for my palate. From Pape Clement we headed straight to the airport to be met by huge queues stretching back 100 plus people outside the airport building.  Managed to get through in time, looking forward to heading north and to my bed tonight.

Quick conclusion. It is a decent vintage but not everywhere. It is important to taste. In terms of ratings it is in the 8/10 category with some of the best wines at 8.5 and possible 9 for a couple. My vote for best commune would be Northern Medoc so both St Estephe and Pauillac.   Some outstanding Sauternes with D’Yquem challenging the pack for best wine of the vintage…

A big thank you to everyone who has followed us this week.  Watch this space for our Bordeaux 2017 Vintage report, recommendations and tasting notes coming soon…
