Great Alternatives to New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc

Great Alternatives to New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc

New Zealand, the world’s second largest producer of Sauvignon Blanc after France, will not be able to meet global demand in 2021 due to an exceptionally small harvest. Extreme spring frosts significantly impacted yields following an earlier-than-normal budburst, which particularly affected white grape varieties in Marlborough.

The near-drought conditions in the three months leading up to the 2021 harvest had compounded the damage inflicted by the spring frosts. This has resulted in Sauvignon Blanc yields in Marlborough being at least 30% down for 2021. This shortage is being exacerbated by increased input costs and ongoing labour shortages due to the closure of borders in New Zealand. The increased demand from the US and their willingness to pay double the price for Marlborough Sauvignon than the UK market means there will be an ongoing shortage for approximately 14 months.

The global shortfall in Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc is a great opportunity to encourage wine drinkers to broaden their horizons. As such, here are some Sauvignon Blanc alternatives that we wholeheartedly recommend!
