Yesterday we did the Syndicat tastings on the right bank with the two most important being the Syndicat de St Emilion in the Salle des Dominicains and the Syndicat Pomerol at the Mairie Pomerol. What they do is give you a firm understanding of the quality of the vintage which varies quiet a bit as you can imagine however I found myself writing good after many tasting notes. We also did a Chateau Visit to La Conseilliante which was charming as they have come out of the UGC tasting this year. Followed by Chateau La Gaffeliere for the La Grappe tasting where all the wine that Stephan Derenoncourt consults for were shown – Favouites where Poujeaux, Larcis Ducasse and Pavie Macquin to name a few.
In the afternoon I left our small tasting party and went to the Moueix Tasting in the Center of Libourne. I was lucky to get the chance to speak to Edouard Moueix about the vintage and he said the following “ climatically it was similar in weather to the 78 vintage but you can't really compare it stylistically as winemaking has moved on so much. In terms of quality it is closer to 2001, better than 2012 and the important thing was their was no hydro stress. He also thought the quality was close to the 99 vintage but the 99 was the opposite with a hot summer and rain during the harvest. He called it “Not great, just good” My favourites from the tasting were Trotanoy and Certan de May, worth noting is a new exclusive wine to the Moueix stable Les Vieux Ormes, a Lalande de Pomerol wine which showed well.
