Jacques Boncoeur: Sustainable Champagne

Jacques Boncoeur: Sustainable Champagne

We are delighted to announce that our very own house Champagne, Jacques Bon Coeur has received the first Sustainable Winegrowing certification in Champagne. This certification is audited and awarded by the Independent French Standardisation Association (AFNOR), every 18 months. It is based on a precise set of specifications and standards set out by ISO 26000, the international reference recognised by more than 100 countries for sustainable development and corporate social responsibility.

Jacques Bon Coeur is produced for us by one of the leading co-operative Champagne Houses, located in the southern border of Champagne and Burgundy. It was founded in 1956 when 130 families came together all bringing work, passion and energy to the table. With 310 hectares of remarkable and unique vineyards, this heart-warming venture of the community has been in place for over 65 years.

We have been working with them for over 20 years now and are thrilled that they have achieved this certificate in recognition of their commitment to the environment. We strongly believe that environmental stewardship is vital to help reduce and reverse the effects of climate change and are pleased to work with wine producers who share our passion, so we can continue to enjoy and share great wines for generations to come.

Sustainable Wine Growing

Sustainable Winegrowing has adopted a modern, ambitious schedule of requirements, based on four key pillars. This is more than simply an environmental certification as it promotes an entire philosophy of sustainability.

  • Taking action for the environment.
  • Guaranteeing quality from grapevine to glass.
  • Supporting the region and local heritage.
  • Offering fair prices to producers and consumers.

At Jacques Boncoeur they practice environmentally sustainable wine growing by using integrated viticultural techniques which takes into account the protection of resources and the environment as well as human health and can be understood as a preliminary stage to organic viticulture.

They ensure all purchases are eco-responsible. Every product or service that a business buys has an impact on the environment throughout its lifecycle, from the raw materials and energy used in production, to the way it is recycled and managed when it is no longer required. Eco-responsible purchasing focuses on reducing the impact of the goods and services you buy on the environment, human health and social conditions. They also have a programme in place to recycle all waste products and have installed solar panels to power the winery.

They have introduced measures to increase biodiversity in the vineyard by managing ground cover and increasing wildlife. Biodiversity is the key indicator of the health of an ecosystem and enables the vineyard to be more resilient to the effects of climate change.

More about Jacques Boncouer

We registered Jacques Boncoeur Champagne, our own house Champagne label, with the Champagne board (CIVC) in 2001. Named after the founder of Bon Coeur, James Goodhart who hand-selected the final blend. It has proved immensely popular with our customers, and has won several awards over the years, as well as giving many Grand Marque Champagnes a run for their money in recent blind tastings. The Brut Reserve was most recently awarded a silver medal at the International Wine Challenge 2022.
