Villa Wolf Pinot GrisVilla Wolf Pinot Gris

Villa Wolf Pinot Gris, Pfalz, Germany 2021

The Villa Wolf Estate was founded in 1756 and has been a highly regarded winery for more than two centuries. It entered an especially glamorous era with the construction of its magnificent estate house and villa in 1843. The celebrated and enigmatic Ernst Loosen took over the Villa Wolf vineyards in 1996 and re-invigorated the estate`s quality and reputation.

Pinot Gris was first made as a varietal style in this part of Germany in the 19th century, creating wines with bold mineral fruit and floral notes. This is a spicy example from the team at Villa Wolf, dry and full of fragrant herbs and citrus. Spicy citrus on the nose, with a lovely lemon lift. It is medium weight, with elegant notes of herbs and white flowers, and a full, mineral palate.

Food Pairing: Particularly good with poached salmon, but also a wonderful partner to classic pasta dishes such as Cacio e Pepe or carbonara.

Louis Latour Grand Ardeche ChardonnayLouis Latour Grand Ardeche Chardonnay

Louis Latour Grand Ardeche Chardonnay, France 2020

The family run company of Louis Latour is one of the most highly respected in Burgundy and is directed by Louis-Fabrice Latour. The Grand Ardeche is treated as if it were grown in one of the Grand Cru vineyards of the Cote d’Or. Fully ripened grapes are selected and pressed lightly before being aged in oak barrels made at the Latour cooperage in Beaune. It is often mistaken for a top-quality white Burgundy when tasted blind. Charming aromas of lemon, green apple, and melon fuse with white flowers and toasted almonds. Round, ample and generous on the mid-palate underpinned by bright, lively acidity and focus that leads through into a core of further citrus and white stone fruit with added white pepper and vanilla spice.

Food pairing: Great with a herby roast free range chicken… no need to make gravy. Just chuck half a lemon, a handful of tarragon a bulb of garlic and a tomato cut in half into the cavity along with a good pinch or two of salt and a splash of wine, roast and serve with the juices, a green salad and some bread and enjoy a perfect lunch or dinner.

Symington Altano RedSymington Altano Red

Symington Altano Red, Douro, Portugal 2019

The Symington family have been synonymous with the Douro valley and the Portuguese wine trade as a whole, for over 130 years. Altano is a blend of Tinta Roriz that provides the rich berry fruit and Touriga Franca that adds a lifted floral character, the majority of the blend was aged in American and French oak casks to soften up the muscular tannin of the Douro grapes so the wine is ready for immediate drinking. An exceptionally good Portuguese red from Symington!

Bright, vibrant nose with Morello cherries and floral notes. Warm, freshly squeezed summer berry fruits with added cherries and a touch of violets. Really juicy style, ripe, rounded tannins - all beautifully integrated.

Food pairing: Keep the theme Portuguese with Cabrito Asado (Braised Kid) or try going for a robust middle eastern Lamb dish such as a shawarma.

Domaine Lafond Lirac RougeDomaine Lafond Lirac Rouge

Domaine Lafond Lirac Rouge, France 2019 (Magnum - 1.5L)

Tremendous attention to detail is the key at Pascal Lafond’s estate based in Tavel, in France`s Rhone Valley. Most of Pascal’s red vines form a single holding straddling the Cotes du Rhone and Lirac appellation. Fashioned predominantly from Grenache and Syrah, with a little Mourvèdre for extra structure, this southern Rhone red is all personality and charm with plenty of flavoursome red and purple fruit and a lifted floral, spicy note.

Charming nose of spicy black fruits with added cherries. Full, round, impressive style with loads of seductive bramble and loganberry fruits fused with soft spice. Great purity and a lingering freshness.

Food pairing: Highly flavoured Toulouse sausages with braised Puy lentils would be just the thing to accompany this delicious wine from the southern Rhone. Typical Charcuterie from the area would also make for a lovely match.
