Viu Manent Secret Malbec, Central Valley, Chile 2020
We are celebrating World Malbec Day this week with this modern and expressive Malbec from Chile. The Malbec grape is originally from the Cahors region of South West France where it is known as Cot. It was also planted in Bordeaux in the 1780s, where it is still used as a minor blending grape. Today, when we think about Malbec we immediately associate it with Argentina, because ever since it arrived in the country in the mid-19th century it has become it's flagship wine variety. However, it also does very well on the other side of the Andes Mountains in Chile.
Why we love it...
It's rich and plush texture with ripe tannins and a smooth finish.
The Story of Viu Manent...
Viu Manent winery has been in the same family since 1935. The vineyard of El Olivar is based near the town of Peralillo in the Colchagua valley where the average vine age is 16 years, growing on clay-dominated soil. 85 percent Malbec and 15 percent a `Secret`, the majority of the wine is aged in French oak to add depth and complexity and the rest is held in stainless steel to retain freshness.
Tastes like...
A modern and focused Malbec with an emphasis on black cherry and plum fruit with a touch of strawberry. Medium-bodied with ripe, fine tannins and abundance of further black and red fruit on the core.
