Chateau Dereszla Dry Furmint, Tokaji, Hungary 2021
To celebrate international Furmint day on 1st February, we are shining a light on this delicious Hungarian native white grape variety! Furmint produces intensely flavoured, high quality, full-bodied, high acid wine. The variety originated in the Tokaji region of Hungary, the home of the famous sweet ‘Aszu’ wines, made with botrytised grapes, where it plays a starring role. However, there has been a revolution in recent years and a new wave of producers have been using modern techniques and facilities to craft amazingly bright and vibrant dry white wines.
Why we love it...
An impressive fragrant dry white from the area famed for sweet wine.
The Story of Chateau Dereszla
Château Dereszla is one of the most iconic estates in Tokaj, boasting a rich history that dates back over 500 years. After many years of neglect, the winery was purchased in 2000 by the d’Aulan family from Champagne, who have invested and renovated the property and introduced state-of-the-art winemaking technology, allowing Dereszla to return to its former glory. As such, it now proudly is held in the highest regards alongside esteemed peers such as Royal Tokaj, Mád, and Disznóko producing both dry (Furmint and Tokaj) and sweet (Aszu) wines.
Tastes like...
Ripe, forward aromas of pear, green apple and lemon citrus with a touch of honeysuckle. Bone dry with crisp, clean acidity and a superb mineral streak that flows into a linear finish of green fruits and white pepper spice. If you like Chablis, this Dry Furmint is definitely worth a try!
