Italy

Italy, the land of a million vineyards, 350 common grape varieties, and 20 distinct regions has for generations been overshadowed by neighbouring France. But, times are changing and a quality-led, modern approach means Italy's wines are starting to grab a deserved share of the spotlight. The country's charm, history and regional diversity are always present in its wines and the entire country is cloaked in vineyards, producing a vast array of varieties and styles. From Tuscany to PugliaPiedmont to Sicily, a journey into Italian wine is never boring.

There are wines for every mood and budget in Italy. The country's output is most often red, from native grapes like Sangiovese, Nebbiolo, Aglianico and Primitivo which all have their own distinct, Italian personality. Italy's reds can be dark and tarry or light and fresh. As for the country's whites, crisp, light Pinot Grigio is currently in vogue, along with Prosecco, an easy-going sparkler from Veneto where producers often struggle to keep up with ever-increasing global demand. Soave is clean and sophisticated, as is Gavi, a long-lived complex white from the north-west.
