Louis Latour

The family run company of Louis Latour is one of the most highly respected in Burgundy and is directed by Louis-Fabrice Latour. Renowned throughout the world for its quality of red and white wines, the company has built a reputation for tradition and innovation. Louis Latour`s Grand Ardeche Chardonnay is often mistaken in blind tastings for a Grand Cru Burgundy, such is the quality. The Domaine Valmoissine Pinot Noir and the Corton Charlemagne Grand Cru offer superb value for money. We have been buying the wines of Louis Latour for many years now, and they have proved to be hugely popular with both our trade and private clients.

French Country

Appellation d'Origine Controlee (AOC) wines take up a significant amount of the limelight in France, but there are many thousands hectares of vineyards that fall outside of this classification. Of these, wines granted the status of Indication Geographique Protegee (IGP) are the most important and include the regions of Ardeche, Languedoc-Roussillon and Cotes de Provence, France's best-known region for rose wines. Producers must meet strict conditions to hit the required quality standards, particularly around yields and minimum alcohol content. There are many excellent wines offering great value for money made under the IGP label and relaxed labelling laws allow winemakers to indicate the wine's grape variety on the bottle. Alongside the classic Chardonnay, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, varieties like Viognier, Grenache and Syrah are prominent. Despite a perception of inferior quality to AOC wines, this is not the case, as winemakers looking to work innovatively outside of their own strict AOC rules will label their wines as IGP.

Cotes de Provence

An appellation lying in the south-east of the region of Provence, Cotes de Provence is responsible for nearly all of the production of Provence's light, salmon-coloured rose wine, made predominantly from Grenache, Carignan, Cinsault, Mourvedre and often an aromatic sprinkling of local Tibouren. While an increasing amount of intriguing red wine is made in Cotes de Provence, 85 percent of the output is rose, and it these crisp, refreshing wines that have made the region famous. The appellation's varied terroirs of steep hills and coastal plains makes for a range of vineyard sites, and the wines vary accordingly. Traditionally a light pink, the best Cotes de Provence roses will burst with red fruit flavour, but their exuberant nature is often accompanied by sophisticated notes of watermelon, forest floor, savoury herbs and a gentle beguiling salinity.

Var

A large appellation, famous for its rose wines in the Languedoc-Roussillon region of south-east France. The appellation encloses both the Bandol and Cotes de Provence appellations and makes fresh, crisp rose wines and full-bodied reds. The warm, sunny temperatures are often cooled by the Mistral breezes, and the landscape is scrubby and dry for the most part, and the garrigue flavours are often found in the wines.

Pinot Noir

Fickle to grow, tricky to make and often majestic to drink, Pinot Noir is the grape of Burgundy, and grown all over the world, most notably in Oregon, New Zealand and California. It is also one of the major blending grapes for Champagne. While the wines from the old world and new are undeniably different, Pinot Noir is a very distinctive variety and its wines reveal soft strawberry and cherry flavours with a heady aroma and often complex savoury characteristics when the grapes are placed in the right hands.
