Masia wines are from La Mancha and Castilla y Leon. The grapes that form the backbone of these varietal wines come from Castilla, La Mancha, in central Spain, which occupies a vast expanse of the central Iberian plateau. La Mancha has one of the most extreme continental climates and grape production can be challenging. The close proximity to the Atlantic has a profound effect on the region`s overall climate, reducing the average temperatures during the growing season which gives added freshness to the wines.

Like many of the regions of Spain, the vineyard area of over 200,000 hectares sits on a high plateau, around 600 metres above sea level. In this dusty, arid landscape producers are often forced to overcome extreme heat in their vineyards, and the altitude of the vineyards helps this, but only a little. Such a vast region is highly diverse, and a broad range of grapes are grown and used to make wines ranging from inexpensive table wines to serious, highly oaked examples of expressive Tempranillo. The local variety Airen accounts for the majority of production and is used mainly for domestic consumption. Cabernet Sauvignon, Garnacha, Chardonnay, Merlot, Monastrell and Torrontes are only the start of a long list of varieties cultivated across this expansive region.

The most well-known examples come from Sancerre and Pouilly Fume in the Loire Valley, and from Marlborough in New Zealand where a grassy, herbaceous style is produced. In Bordeaux it is blended with Semillon to make the sweet wines of Sauternes, and crisp dry wines that can be as excellent as they are expensive.
