Gilbert Chon

Founded in 1719 and located in Saint Julien de Concelles (the beating heart of Muscadet Sèvre et Maine production), on the Atlantic coast where the Melon de Bourgogne grape is king producing crisp, clean and luscious wines thanks to extended lees ageing.  The estate is now under the watchful eye of Jean-Gilbert Chon, who crafts several small, single-vineyard parcels including Clos de la Chapelle and Clos du Parc, as well as excellent Sauvignon Blanc (Le Haut Clos) and Cabernet Franc (Le Tristan) based-wines at a fraction of the price of nearby regions such as Sancerre and Bourgeuil. Without doubt one of the best in the business!

Loire Valley

A couple of hours drive south of Paris, and to the west of Burgundy, the wine region of the Loire Valley is one of the most diverse in France. The quality of Loire wine is often overlooked, but they can offer serious value and are renowned for their classy style and fresh flavours. Starting on the Atlantic Coast in the city of Nantes, the region winds its way 300 miles up the Loire River through green, rural land to the pretty villages of the Upper Loire. The scattered nature of the appellations of the Loire host a wide range of soils and climatic conditions for making wine. The climate is cool, and the wines typically have fresh acidity and clean, pure flavours. Appellations of note include Touraine, Sancerre, Muscadet, Pouilly-Fume and Saumur-Champigny. The Loire's 4000 wineries produce a diverse range of wines across all three colours alongside sparkling Cremant de Loire and golden, sticky sweet wines. Most famously, the Loire is known for white wines made from Sauvignon Blanc, Melon de Bourgogne and Chenin Blanc, while Cabernet Franc is the Loire's most famous red export.

Muscadet

Referring to wines produced in the coastal westerly appellations of the Loire Valley, Muscadet is the name given to a wine, not a region or grape. Lending its name to four individual appellations, including Muscadet itself, wines are produced exclusively from the Melon de Bourgogne grape. The crisp, dry, saline flavours typically found in Muscadet wines have made them the perfect match for the famous seafood of northern France. The proximity to the sea gives a temperate maritime climate, and the soils are often sandy, with elements of gneiss, schist and limestone. Wines are frequently left on the lees for extended periods, known as sur lie, which adds richness and creaminess to what can otherwise be a simple wine. Expect green apple and citrus flavours and a spritzy tingle on the tongue. The best wines will show notes of pepper and a clean, mineral freshness.

Melon de Bourgogne

Melon de Bourgogne is the sole grape used to make Muscadet, a French white wine made on the western fringes of the Loire Valley. A cold-resistant grape, it is usually known by its shortened name, Melon, and is believed to have been introduced to the Loire in 1709, after frost destroyed existing vines. It produces wines with good acidity, and apple and citrus flavours. More expensive Muscadet wines may have benefited from some barrel ageing and lees contact, which deepens a naturally light flavour profile.
