Nicolas Ruinart established the Champagne house of Ruinart in 1729, which today stands as the oldest Champagne house in France. A true entrepreneur, Nicolas Ruinart fulfilled the ambition of his uncle, the Benedictine monk Dom Thierry Ruinart, to make Ruinart the premier Champagne house. Full bodied, supple and extremely smooth, Ruinart Champagnes combine delicacy and subtle freshness. The Ruinart taste comes from the distinctive flavours of the predominant Chardonnay grape; the elegance of the grapes from the Cotes de Blancs and the character and body of those from the Montagne de Reims. With some of the finest grapes, skilful blending and extensive ageing in its 2000 year old cellars; Ruinart defines excellence and luxury.

The first choice for celebrations of love, success and life's rites of passage for generations, the exclusive sparkling wines from the Champagne region of France hold a special place in the world of wine. The most northerly of France's wine regions, Champagne's history of sparkling wines dates back to 1668 when Dom Perignon, a local monk, is said to have created the method still used to produce Champagne today. The chalky soils of Champagne are home to Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, all employed in a typical Champagne blend. The northerly location of the vineyards means that ripening can be a problem, so using a blend of grapes is critical. Most typically made in a brut, or dry style, non-vintage (NV) Champagne is a blend of wines from a number of years. Vintage champagnes, made only in the best years, are aged extensively before release, creating richer, biscuity flavours.

From the lean, crisp wines of Chablis, to the exceptional dry Blancs de Blancs of Champagne and the buttery, rich, oaky wines of the warmer regions of California, Chardonnay wines exhibit a full spectrum of flavours and styles. As a fairly neutral grape, it is the land, soil, location, climate and winemaker that have the biggest impact on this famous grape.
