The town of Franschhoek was founded by French Huguenots in 1688. Franschhoek Cellar is a wine co-operative producer for a community of grape farmers in the Franschhoek valley of South Africa. As a pillar of the community, they operate as a private cellar delivering fantastic quality wines with a distinctive personality and character that emulates the grace and charm of their French Huguenot heritage. They produce a range of three white and three red varietal wines, that represent excellent value.

Encompassing amongst others, Stellenbosch, Paarl, and Constantia, the area is closely linked with South Africa's viticultural history. Bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the west and mountain ranges to the south and east, the topography of the region creates a cooler maritime climate near to the coast and a more settled Mediterranean climate further inland. A wide range of soil types is found here, with granite, schist and sandstone common. Grape varieties planted across the region are diverse, with the cooler regions home to plantings of Sauvignon Blanc, and the warmer inland areas close to the mountain ranges fostering the production of Pinotage, Chenin Blanc and Syrah. Pockets of vineyards also produce Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, blending them to produce a Bordeaux-style red wine.

Vines were first planted after the arrival of the French Huguenots in the 1680s, and the region makes up 20 percent of South Africa's vineyard plantings. Separated from Paarl to the north by the Simonsberg Mountain, and from Walker Bay to the east by the Hottentot Hollands mountain range, the rolling vineyards of Stellenbosch are home to a hot, dry climate, tempered by cool Atlantic breezes. Soils are extremely diverse, with light sandy soils on the coast giving way to heavier granite soils on the lower slopes of the mountains, with sheltered valleys and exposed hillsides creating diverse growing conditions. The region is home to a broad variety of grapes, but Cabernet Sauvignon is the most notable. Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc grow well closer to the sea, while Syrah and Pinotage, a Cinsault-Pinot Noir cross first cultivated in the region in the 1920s, also flourish.

It typically produces deep-red varietal wines with smoky, bramble and earthy flavours, sometimes with aromas of bananas and tropical fruit. Pinotage is often blended, and also made into fortified wine and red sparkling wine. The majority of Pinotage is grown in South Africa, but there are also plantings in Canada, the United States and New Zealand
