Dr Loosen

Ernst Loosen is a German winemaker and owner of the wine producer Dr.Loosen, located just outside Bernkastel in the Mosel-Saar-Ruwer region of Germany. The estate has been in the same family for over 200 years and when Ernst assumed ownership in 1988, he realised that with ungrafted vines averageing 60 years old in some of Germany’s best vineyards, he had the raw materials to create outstanding, world-class wines. To achieve this, Ernst Loosen reduced his crop size significantly and stopped all chemical fertilisation, instead using organic fertilisers in moderation. Riesling are the only grapes grown at the estate, and the vineyards owe their excellent quality to three contributing factors. the regional climate of the Mosel area, the mineral rich slate and volcanic soils and the age of the estates ungrafted Riesling vines.

Mosel

Mosel, Germany's most famous wine region, is an area of two distinct halves. On the flatter, fertile land large commercial producers churn out litre after litre of indistinct table wine, made from neutral, uninspiring varieties. The other, much more exciting half of the Mosel are the precipitously steep slopes that tower above the regions' rivers, where growers craft intensely flavoured Riesling grapes that will help make some of the world's finest wine. Due to the cold climate, the steep slopes are critical for giving the vines the sunlight they need to ripen, and only those with a south or south-easterly aspect will be used to produce quality grapes. The steep slopes are a no-go for machinery, so all the grapes are tediously hand-harvested, and the pickers get an excellent workout moving up and down the hillsides. The lean, pure Riesling that results from their efforts, with its charming floral character and delicate balance, must make it all feel worth it.

Riesling

Riesling is a white grape variety which originated in Germany and now has plantings in many other countries including Alsace, New Zealand and Australia. Riesling is an aromatic grape variety displaying clean fruit and floral aromas, with green apple, and layered citrus flavours. It can make great varietally pure wines across the spectrum, from steely bone-dry examples to unctuous, sweet dessert wines. Its high acidity allows some examples to be extensively aged, where they can develop great complexity.
