Boekenhoutskloof is one of South Africa’s most famous wineries, founded in 1776, in a remote corner of the idyllic Franschhoek Valley. It rose to fame in the early 1990s, under new ownership and the winemaking expertise of Mark Kent, and the introduction of the iconic blend. The Chocolate Block, which changes every year according to the vintage and mystery of the vineyards’ origins.

Red blended wines are created around the world from a multitude of grapes and are often focused on local varieties. Well-blended red wines should make use of complementary varieties, that balance each other well. Cabernet Sauvignon often plays a major part, as does Syrah and Pinot Noir. Australia makes excellent wines from Grenache, Shiraz and Mataro, known as GSMs. Portuguese red blends typically rely on inky Touriga Nacional, and in Argentina, Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon are good friends.
