Pol Roger

Established in 1849, Champagne Pol Roger remains family-owned and proudly independent. The history and spirit of the company mirrors that of the family who bear the same name. a respect for nature, devotion to quality and a certain joie de vivre. Pol Roger has a total annual production of 1.5 million bottles from 87 hectares of vineyards on prime sites in the Valle d`Epernay and the Cote des Blancs, boosted by grapes from individual growers, many of whom have supplied Pol Roger for generations. This makes Champagne Pol Roger one of the smallest family run houses. Its cellars, extending to 7 km, lie on three levels in the chalk below the streets of Epernay and are among the deepest and coolest cellars in the region. contributing to the slow maturation and creation of fine, persistent bubbles which are the hallmark of all Pol Roger champagnes.

Champagne

What is it about Champagne? The first choice for celebrations of love, success and life's rites of passage for generations, the exclusive sparkling wines from the Champagne region of France hold a special place in the world of wine. The most northerly of France's wine regions, Champagne's history of sparkling wines dates back to 1668 when Dom Perignon, a local monk, is said to have created the method still used to produce Champagne today. The chalky soils of Champagne are home to Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, all employed in a typical Champagne blend. The northerly location of the vineyards means that ripening can be a problem, so using a blend of grapes is critical. Most typically made in a brut, or dry style, non-vintage (NV) Champagne is a blend of wines from a number of years. Vintage champagnes, made only in the best years, are aged extensively before release, creating richer, biscuity flavours.

Champagne Blend

Champagne, one of the world’s most well-known wine styles, is typically made from a combination of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier wines. Simply, Pinot Noir adds structure, Chardonnay adds weight and Pinot Meunier backs them up while ripening early, ensuring growers can harvest some grapes while avoiding potential frosts. Each Champagne house has a different style, and proportionately uses the wines in order to emulate this. Blancs de Blancs, a commonly labelled style, is made from 100% Chardonnay.
