Southern Rhone

Southern Rhone

Part of the larger Rhone Valley wine region, the southern Rhone is separated from the northern Rhone by the 45th parallel and its vineyards fan out across the landscape as the region moves south, following the Rhone River towards the Mediterranean Sea. The climate is Mediterranean and the rugged landscape creates different mesoclimates, aiding production of a diverse range of grapes.

If the northern Rhone is about quality, the southern Rhone takes a more quantitative approach to its wines and is a significant producer of good-quality, value wines for everyday consumption in both France and across its export markets. Much of this wine is labelled as Cotes du Rhone, an appellation title which is applied to a large quantity of the region's output and provides both entry-level quaffers and age-worthy, top-quality fine wines. Some individually named appellations exist including Chateauneuf-du-Pape, Vacqueyras, Gigondas and Beaumes-de-Venise.

  • Coudoulet de Beaucastel Cotes du Rhone Rouge

Punchy, bright and full bodied, the 2014 vintage of Cotes du Rhone favourite Coudolet de Beaucastel can thank an extended burst of sunshine late in the growing season for its delicious, well-balanced character. Ripe and round, with a beautiful line of fresh acidity and heady notes of herbs and spice. • Chateau de Beaucastel Chateauneuf-du-Pape

A long, slow ripening period was the story of the vintage at Beaucastel in 2014, and as a result the estate's Chateauneuf-du-Pape is charming and elegant with intense, round purple fruit and lifted notes of violets and spice. The fine tannin and abundant freshness ensure that this will be one to watch, and should be cellared until at least 2020, while continuing to show its talent until 2030. Considered one of the great wines of France, Chateau de Beaucastel is known for its sophistication, balance and beautifully concentrated fruit. Beaucastel has organically cultivated all the 13 permitted varieties since the 1960s. In varying degrees, these grapes create the Beaucastel blend – a rich, heady mix that is at the vanguard of this famous appellation.

  • Coudoulet de Beaucastel Cotes du Rhone Blanc

Despite some patchy weather during the 2013 growing season, this well known Cotes du Rhone white from Beaucastel is showing really well. Full-flavoured, with exotic notes of stone fruit and white flowers, a delicious intensity and the necessary acidity to allow it to develop further in the cellar, this wine easily overshadows many more expensive offerings from neighbouring Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Each vintage of Coudolet Blanc is taken from a 30-hectare plot of vines east of the Beaucastel vineyard, next to the northern border of Chateauneuf-du-Pape. The hand-picked grapes are partially fermented in oak, which develops some additional richness and complexity. 30% Bourboulenc, 30% Marsanne, 30% Viognier, 10% Clairette.

    Domaine Lafond Roc-Epine Chateauneuf-du-Pape

Like many classic Chateauneuf-du-Papes, Grenache is the star in this wine, providing the red-fruited background that is overlaid with plump Syrah and structured Mourvedre. A touch of oak ageing adds some fragrant complexity and vanilla, while the silky, fine tannin and lingering freshness show that there this wine will continue to develop through until 2022.

  • Coudoulet de Beaucastel Cotes du Rhone Rouge

The 2011 vintage of Coudolet was helped by a hot spring and a long Indian summer, allowing the grapes to ripen perfectly with rich concentration and superb acidity. Bright and lively with red fruit and fragrant woody herbs. Known as the baby Beaucastel, each vintage of Coudolet is taken from a 30-hectare plot of vines east of the Beaucastel vineyard. The hand-picked grapes are classically macerated and aged in large oak barrels for six months. 30% Grenache, 30% Mourvedre, 20% Syrah and 20% Cinsault.

  • Chateau de Beaucastel Chateauneuf-du-Pape Blanc

Well, well. After a difficult growing season with some mixed weather and a touch more humidity than usual, the winemaker has earned his euros with the 2014 vintage of Beaucastel blanc. This is outrageously good wine, with a broad spectrum of rich exotic fruit and unctuous, honeyed notes. Buttery toasted nuts and white flowers accompany the fruit, and there's a delicate salted caramel character on the lingering finish. Drink now, or lay down til 2025. Only seven hectares of the Beaucastel vineyard is planted with white varieties, 80 percent of which is Rousanne. These long-lived white wines, limited in their availability and typically brimming with rich stone fruits and spice are well worth seeking out, either for cellaring or drinking.
