  • Coudoulet de Beaucastel Cotes du Rhone Blanc

Despite some patchy weather during the 2013 growing season, this well known Cotes du Rhone white from Beaucastel is showing really well. Full-flavoured, with exotic notes of stone fruit and white flowers, a delicious intensity and the necessary acidity to allow it to develop further in the cellar, this wine easily overshadows many more expensive offerings from neighbouring Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Each vintage of Coudolet Blanc is taken from a 30-hectare plot of vines east of the Beaucastel vineyard, next to the northern border of Chateauneuf-du-Pape. The hand-picked grapes are partially fermented in oak, which develops some additional richness and complexity. 30% Bourboulenc, 30% Marsanne, 30% Viognier, 10% Clairette.

    Chateau Climens, Barsac

    Chateau Climens

    Chateau Climens, Barsac

The 2016 Climens was tasted from the 12 different lots that will go into the Grand Vin, with some selected from the Deuxième Vin, Cyprès de Climens. As usual, I had to assemble them in my mind and relate commonalities, though at a négoçiant a week later I re-tasted four preprepared micro-blends. I found much elegance this year. It is not a powerful Climens in the making and even with the higher alcohol lots that reached 14.9%, you could not feel any warmth and the wines maintained the tension. Some lots displayed saline finishes, perhaps a little more than usual. Perhaps the most important factor was just how "Barsac" they all tasted. Drink 2021-2055. 95-97 points. Neal Martin, erobertparker.com, April 2017

  • Chateau Rieussec Les Carmes de Rieussec, Sauternes

2011 was a great year for Sauternes and this second wine of Rieussec shows great botrytis weight and richness as well as a floral and fruity character. Bitter orange marmalade and honey give this still-youthful wine its sweeter and fruitier side. Drink from 2016. 90 points. Wine Enthusiast, May 2014

    Hamilton Russell Chardonnay

    Hamilton Russell

    Hamilton Russell Chardonnay

The Hemel-en-Aarde Valley in South Africa's Walker Bay is one of the most beautiful wine regions on earth, and the proximity of the vineyards to the sea means the fresh Atlantic breezes help create wines with rich flavour and crisp, natural acidity. This wine is barrel fermented and aged on its lees for nine months, giving the focused, juicy fruit and nervy acidity a complex texture and full weight.
