Margaux

25 kilometres north of the city of Bordeaux, Margaux is a world-renowned wine appellation, known for it's silky, fragrant blended red wines. It is the largest appellation within the Haut-Medoc and counts several villages within its boundaries, including Margaux itself. The best vineyards are located on well-drained slopes, and the soils are some of the lightest, most gravelly in the Medoc, which provide the wines with their typical refinement and smooth character.

The growing environment is scattered, and many of even the wealthiest chateaux have vineyards dispersed amongst those of their nearest competition. Wine is made to the individual styles of the estates and is less reliant on terroir. The Cabernet Sauvignon dominant wines are often austere in their youth, but eventually flourish into complex, sophisticated and sensual wines with time and the best Margaux wines can be very long-lived.

  1. Rich, powerful red
Chateau Palmer is without a doubt one of the finest estates in Margaux, under the watchful eye of superstar winemaker Thomas Duroux. Unusually for Margaux (and a signature of Palmer) there is a high proportion of Merlot in the blend and produces a pure, sophisticated wine. The vineyard has been certified biodynamic since 2014 an... Read more

  2. Rich, powerful red
This is a very dense Margaux, and especially for the vintage, with a full body, grainy tannins and a long and rich finish. Impressive depth of fruit and structure. Luscious and muscular at the same time. 97-98 points. James Suckling, jamessuckling.com, April 2018.... Read more

  4. Rich, powerful red
It has a fascinating bouquet with pure blackberry, iris, crushed stone and a light estuarine influence that becomes stronger with aeration, just a faint touch of oyster shell developing in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannin, crisp acidity, very elegant and refined, possibly the most feminine Rauzan-Ség... Read more

`This is a really beautiful, seductive wine with chocolate, walnuts, currants and some tobacco. Full-bodied, with a supple tannin texture and a flavorful finish. Succulent. Blend of 60% merlot and 40% cabernet sauvignon. Second wine of d’Issan.` 93-94/100 points. James Suckling, jamessuckling.com, June 2020... Read more
