Claudie Jobard boasts a proud viticultural and vinicultural heritage as her mother, Laurence, was the head winemaker at Joseph Drouhin for many years, and her father, Roger, founded one of the region’s top vine nurseries. Roger developed the family Domaine in the 1970s through buying and planting land in Rully, which has now come to fruition as most of the vines are 40+ years-old and are producing some excellent wines. Claudie took charge of the estate in 2002, after graduating from her oenology degree and changed the direction of the Domaine by stopping selling to négociants, and instead started a new venture by bottling wines under her own name.

Spanning 26,000 hectares of vineyards and over 3,000 individual producers across nearly 100 different appellations, unlocking the mysteries of Burgundy for your drinking enjoyment can require a sense of adventure, but getting to know a few villages and their style is a good way to start the journey. Burgundy is broken into six distinct areas. Just south of Dijon, the Cote de Beaune and Cote de Nuits make up the larger Cote d'Or, considered the beating heart of Burgundian production and the focus of the fine wine world. Vineyards are divided into tiny parcels, and some growers may only own a row or less of vines in the most esteemed sites. Chablis, in the north, is famous for its crisp whites, while south of the Cote d'Or Cote Chalonnaise and Maconnais offer great value. Propping up the Burgundy map is the large region of Beaujolais, the place to uncover juicy, fruity, unoaked Gamay wines. For our Fine Wine Burgundy selection go to Fine Wine where you can choose from a top wine selection from the renowned villages of Puligny Montrachet, Meursault, Nuit St Georges, Gevrey Chambertin, and many more top Burgundian appellations.

Located close to the celebrated wine regions planted along the Cote d'Or escarpment further north, the vineyards of Cote Chalonnaise are scattered across the rolling landscape as growers and producers look for the best limestone-clay rich sites to grow their grapes. The climate is continental, with warm days and cool nights and the long summers provide optimum conditions for ripening grapes. Except for Bouzeron, which makes wines from the Aligote grape, the majority of the Cote Chalonnaise is planted with Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Though the wines from Cote Chalonnaise may not always have the richness and complexity of their esteemed northerly cousins, they also don't have the price tag, making the region a great option for high quality, great value Burgundy wine.

The village sits underneath the eastern side of a limestone-rich ridge whose northern tip is five kilometres from the famous appellation of Chassagne-Montrachet in the Cote de Beaune. The best vineyards have soils rich in free-draining limestone with a moisture-retaining clay base, along with an easterly aspect that exposes the grapes to the morning sun. Rully Chardonnay is typically clean and flinty with peach, citrus and white flowers developing notes of honey and dried fruit with time. Pinot Noirs will be fleshy and spicy, with cherries and blackberries sitting nicely alongside fine tannins. Rully has also developed a reputation for the quality of its Cremant de Bourgogne sparkling wines. While not as prestigious as the prized vineyards to the north Rully shares many of the same traits that make these vineyards famous. As a result it offers value and quality in spades.
View more wines from this appellationFickle to grow, tricky to make and often majestic to drink, Pinot Noir is the grape of Burgundy, and grown all over the world, most notably in Oregon, New Zealand and California. It is also one of the major blending grapes for Champagne. While the wines from the old world and new are undeniably different, Pinot Noir is a very distinctive variety and its wines reveal soft strawberry and cherry flavours with a heady aroma and often complex savoury characteristics when the grapes are placed in the right hands.
