La Horra

A project started in 1999 by Roda (La Rioja) and after almost a 10-year search for the perfect location, La Horra was founded in 2008. The winery shares the same technical team as their sister estate, and thus can tap into their wealth of knowledge and understanding of Tempanillo, working alongside experienced viticulturists, the Balbás brothers, to create modern, pure, and precise wines that still lay true to their Ribera del Duero roots.

Ribera del Duero

Located in Castilla y Leon in the north of Spain, the best Ribera del Duero wines are some of Spain's most famous vinous exports. Translating as bank of the Duero the region gets its water supply for irrigation from the Duero river, necessary for such a warm area. The region's vineyards are situated on a plateau 800 metres above sea level, and climatic conditions are extreme: sweltering dry summers and very cold winters. Tempranillo, Spain's most famous red grape, loves this punishing climate and the hot ripening season allows the grape to develop excellent phenolic ripeness, which brings lifted, fragrant aromatics to the finished wines. Vega Sicilia was one of the first to gain global success at the upper end of the market, and its intensely coloured, structured wines with blackberries, dark plums and tobacco have become modern legends. Not surprisingly, other producers now follow their lead and the region is home to some of Spain's most impressive wines.

Tempranillo

Tempranillo is a variety of widely grown black grape, and is most famously used in the wines of Spain and Portugal. Nearly every red wine from Rioja and the Ribero del Duero uses Tempranillo as the heart of their blended wines, and in Portugal, as Tinto Roriz, it is a key component of the fortified Port blend. Tempranillo wines are ruby-red in colour, with notes of red-berries, plum, tobacco, vanilla, leather, and herbs. The grape is also extensively grown in Argentina and Chile.
