Spanish Fine Wine
The Spanish fine wine market is exciting, vibrant and growing as wine buyers seek alternative countries for wine investment opportunities. Spain modernised and improved viticulture and vinification practices tremendously in the 1990s and early 2000s with an injection of EU funding and now the industry is thriving and the wines are just getting better and better. Spain is known for red blends, fresh whites and native varietals which are good to outstanding quality and approachable.
Along the Atlantic coast Rias Baixas and its saline, fresh Albarino white wines have made a remarkable impact, while the abundantly fruit-driven Tempranillo-based wines from Rioja and the robust red wines of Ribera del Duero are stored proudly in many cellars. Sherry is once again thriving, as are the sparkling Cava wines of Catalunya while many previously obscure areas are producing exciting, modern and innovative wines. Look out for Navarra, Toro and Carinena.
