While vines have been planted on its plains since Roman times, they owe their current appearance to François-Joseph Fournier, the founding father of the estate, who re-landscaped the island after it was devastated by a fire. In 2019, after a busy life as a winegrower and sailor, his grandson chose CHANEL to take care of Domaine de l’Ile and bring out the best of this remarkable heritage site. Convinced of its potential, the estate team strives to reveal the excellence of this terroir. Each plot of vines is worked with precision throughout the seasons. Only grapes from these 23 hectares make up the final blend of the estate’s wines.

Of these, wines granted the status of Indication Geographique Protegee (IGP) are the most important and include the regions of Ardeche, Languedoc-Roussillon and Cotes de Provence, France's best-known region for rose wines. Producers must meet strict conditions to hit the required quality standards, particularly around yields and minimum alcohol content. There are many excellent wines offering great value for money made under the IGP label and relaxed labelling laws allow winemakers to indicate the wine's grape variety on the bottle. Alongside the classic Chardonnay, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, varieties like Viognier, Grenache and Syrah are prominent. Despite a perception of inferior quality to AOC wines, this is not the case, as winemakers looking to work innovatively outside of their own strict AOC rules will label their wines as IGP.

Grenache offers, body and empowerment to the wine, when enjoyed young, lovely elegant aromas of red summer berries. Cinsault, a grape originaly from the Provence wine region, brings freshness and delicacy. Finally the Syrah brings a touch of colour. One of the hallmarks of Provence rose is it’s colour, today the paler the better, our customers look for great quality and taste with just a hint of blush pink hue.
