Isabella Bisol
Winemaker at Terre di Sant'Alberto
"Our philosophy focuses on minimal intervention in the vineyard and winery to let the natural qualities of the grape shine through."
Biography
Isabella Bisol was born into wine and grew up in the famed vineyards throughout the rolling hills of Valdobbiadene in the heart of Prosecco DOC. After studying and travelling abroad, she felt the draw of returning to her roots and is the fifth generation to run the family winery, which produces our excellent Terre di Sant’Alberto Prosecco.
Isabella maintains the standard of excellence that her grandfather Giustino Bisol established so many years ago, perfectly blending respect for tradition with a modern, forward-thinking approach.
Q & A
How did you get started in the wine trade?
My family has been working in wine for three generations, so I can say I grew up in the field, but at some point, I wanted to start my own project.
What has surprised you about being a winemaker?
How you are at the same time deeply rooted in your place and communicating with people and places all over the world, so far away and different.
Could you provide a brief description of the winery and vineyards?
In the heart of Valdobbiadene, ten hectares of vineyard and a small plot of Cartizze. These are the steep and beautiful hills that have been farmed by hand for centuries, and since 2019 are UNESCO world heritage. The job of preserving this beauty and making high-quality wine is passed from one generation to the next. Our winery is based in Valdobbiadene, where we have been producing Prosecco for decades.
What goals in winemaking are you still working to acheive?
My goal is always to be able to express at it best all the potential of Glera and all the different aspects of the identity of our territory.
What is your winemaking philosophy?
We emphasize the importance of preserving the distinct character of the Glera grape, native to the Valdobbiadene region, by maintaining traditional methods and integrating modern techniques to enhance quality. Our philosophy focuses on minimal intervention in the vineyard and winery to let the natural qualities of the grape shine through. We prioritise sustainability and respects the unique terroir of their vineyards and aim to produce Prosecco that embodies elegance, freshness, and authenticity.
Who has influenced your winemaking style the most?
My father, for sure!
How do you know when you have a particularly good vintage on your hands?
Looking at the grapes, talking with the vine growers, and tasting the samples in the laboratory.
If you could make wine anywhere else in the world, where would it be?
Frankly, I have no desire to make wine anywhere else. Valdobbiadene's hills are so beautiful! However, if I must pick up one place I would say Sicily; to see how it is like to work in such a different climate and soil.
Can you explain how and why you employ sustainable winemaking?
Yes, we prioritise environmentally friendly practices, minimizing our ecological footprint while maintaining the highest quality standards. Our vineyard management and winemaking processes are designed to respect and enhance the natural ecosystem. By employing these practices, we ensure our wines reflect the true character of our unique terroir.
Consumers are becoming increasingly concious of their impact on the planet and are trying to be more sustainable. Is this (sustainability) something you actively employ at the winery?
Yes, our commitment to sustainability ensures we preserve the environment while producing high-quality wines. We continuously seek innovative ways to enhance our sustainability efforts. This dedication aligns with the values of environmentally conscious consumers.
How has climate change impacted your winemaking?
Through the years, we saw the season changing and we now harvest in early September, while my grandfather’s generation use to do it in the early November! For now, we just have to look at the plants, be tune with their growing season and be ready when its time.
What is your favourite restaurant, and why?
Can I say my grandmother's home?!
What is your favourite wine, and who would you share it with?
I love Prosecco of course! If you ask me to pick up something different, I would go for a Pinot Noir and I would share it with my friends.
