Maison Roche de Bellene was founded in 2008 by Nicolas Potel after he parted company with his previous partners who own the right to the `Nicolas Potel` label. Located in Burgundy`s Cote de Beaune, the estate is working towards full biodynamic status and currently they use a number of natural and sustainable processes to produce their wines. Nicolas works with a number of growers and has an old-vine strategy, with the oldest vines well over 100. Nicolas is one of the most exciting ‘new generation’ winemakers in Burgundy producing exceptional vintages year after year.

Spanning 26,000 hectares of vineyards and over 3,000 individual producers across nearly 100 different appellations, unlocking the mysteries of Burgundy for your drinking enjoyment can require a sense of adventure, but getting to know a few villages and their style is a good way to start the journey. Burgundy is broken into six distinct areas. Just south of Dijon, the Cote de Beaune and Cote de Nuits make up the larger Cote d'Or, considered the beating heart of Burgundian production and the focus of the fine wine world. Vineyards are divided into tiny parcels, and some growers may only own a row or less of vines in the most esteemed sites. Chablis, in the north, is famous for its crisp whites, while south of the Cote d'Or Cote Chalonnaise and Maconnais offer great value. Propping up the Burgundy map is the large region of Beaujolais, the place to uncover juicy, fruity, unoaked Gamay wines. For our Fine Wine Burgundy selection go to Fine Wine where you can choose from a top wine selection from the renowned villages of Puligny Montrachet, Meursault, Nuit St Georges, Gevrey Chambertin, and many more top Burgundian appellations.

Pinot Noir from the Cote de Nuits has a deeper colour and longer life than wine from Pommard or Volnay, say, further south in the neighbouring Cote de Beaune. Stretching 16 kilometres north to south and home to 25 Grand Cru sites and 135 Premier Cru appellations, the region's municipal centre is the small town of Nuits-Saint-Georges. While the Cote de Nuits is not as prolific as its southerly neighbour, it is a region that prides itself on quality over quantity. Of the many Grand Cru sites, the prestigious appellations of Vosne-Romanee and Chambolle-Musigny produce ethereal versions of Pinot Noir, usually for a stratospheric price. Nothing comes cheap on the Cote de Nuits, but if you're looking for diamonds (or red rubies) this is the best mine to prospect in.
View more wines from this sub regionThanks to its vineyards having a touch more chalk than the other communes of the Cote de Nuits, the wines of Chambolle-Musigny are considered to be the most elegant and restrained wines from this part of Burgundy. With 150 hectares of grapes, all Pinot Noir, Chambolle-Musigny has two Grand Cru vineyards and 24 that have been granted Premier Cru status. The small village of 400 people sits on the upper slopes of the Cote d'Or escarpment at a height of around 300 metres, while the vineyards fan out below towards Vougeot and Morey-Saint-Denis. The limestone-clay soils are shallow in places, but fissures in the rock allow the vines to dig deep into the earth to look for nourishment. Powerful yet refined, rich yet elegant, the Pinot Noir wines of Chambolle-Musigny are considered to be some of the best in the world. The violet and red fruit aromas are easily recognisable and a bold palate of raspberry, cherry and spice develops with age into something infinitely graceful, with complex notes of prune, stewed fruits, and truffle.
View more wines from this appellationFickle to grow, tricky to make and often majestic to drink, Pinot Noir is the grape of Burgundy, and grown all over the world, most notably in Oregon, New Zealand and California. It is also one of the major blending grapes for Champagne. While the wines from the old world and new are undeniably different, Pinot Noir is a very distinctive variety and its wines reveal soft strawberry and cherry flavours with a heady aroma and often complex savoury characteristics when the grapes are placed in the right hands.
