Since 2007, Domaine Faiveley has been under the guidance of Bernard Hervet. The 115 hectare domaine is split between an estate of 78 hectares in Mercurey and 37 hectares in the Cote d’Or and is now one of the largest domaines in Burgundy. The vineyards are run with tight precision and nothing is left to chance through a controlled vineyard management program. Their aim for elegance and finesse is now being rewarded and each wine possesses an individual character and quality that is a great reflection of the domaine`s terroir.

The illustrious wine region of Burgundy, home of the world's greatest Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, can be confusing for even experienced wine buffs. Spanning 26,000 hectares of vineyards and over 3,000 individual producers across nearly 100 different appellations, unlocking the mysteries of Burgundy for your drinking enjoyment can require a sense of adventure, but getting to know a few villages and their style is a good way to start the journey. Burgundy is broken into six distinct areas. Just south of Dijon, the Cote de Beaune and Cote de Nuits make up the larger Cote d'Or, considered the beating heart of Burgundian production and the focus of the fine wine world. Vineyards are divided into tiny parcels, and some growers may only own a row or less of vines in the most esteemed sites. Chablis, in the north, is famous for its crisp whites, while south of the Cote d'Or Cote Chalonnaise and Maconnais offer great value. Propping up the Burgundy map is the large region of Beaujolais, the place to uncover juicy, fruity, unoaked Gamay wines. The northern half of the Cote d'Or region, the Cote de Nuits is some of the world's prime winemaking real estate, and the spiritual home of Pinot Noir, which makes up 95 percent of the region's plantings. Pinot Noir from the Cote de Nuits has a deeper colour and longer life than wine from Pommard or Volnay, say, further south in the neighbouring Cote de Beaune. Stretching 16 kilometres north to south and home to 25 Grand Cru sites and 135 Premier Cru appellations, the region's municipal centre is the small town of Nuits-Saint-Georges. While the Cote de Nuits is not as prolific as its southerly neighbour, it is a region that prides itself on quality over quantity. Of the many Grand Cru sites, the prestigious appellations of Vosne-Romanee and Chambolle-Musigny produce ethereal versions of Pinot Noir, usually for a stratospheric price. Nothing comes cheap on the Cote de Nuits, but if you're looking for diamonds (or red rubies) this is the best mine to prospect in.

With nine Grand Cru and 26 Premier Cru vineyards, the position of Gevrey-Chambertin among the world's great wine producing regions cannot be underestimated. In 1847 Gevrey, as it was then known, was the first to add the title of its most regarded vineyard to its village name. This trend now stretches to 11 other villages in the Cote d'Or, Puligny-Montrachet and Vosne-Romanee among them. A broad appellation, Gevrey-Chambertin is located in the north of the Cote de Nuits region, and its best vineyards fan out up and away from the village, reaching heights of 380 metres. While celebrated for its Grand Cru wines, demand has put these out of reach of most, and the quality and consistency of Gevrey-Chambertin's Premier Cru and Villages status wines is exceptional. Big, bold and muscular, Gevrey-Chambertin Pinot Noir is the most full-bodied, concentrated wine in Burgundy. The deeply fruited, floral flavours of youth give way to a wine of immense finesse and velvety tannin when aged, and the best examples will mture gracefully for many decades.

It is also one of the major blending grapes for Champagne.
