Made up of several sub-regions, including the Maipo Valley, Colchagua and the Casablanca Valley the region stretches for 400 kilometres from north to south and is home to some of the country's biggest producers. Its large size and variable topography present a broad range of climatic conditions, soils and styles. Vineyards are planted on coastal plains, in the foothills of the Andes and at rocky altitudes of up to 750 metres. As a result a diverse variety of grapes are planted across the region. Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Chardonnay all have homes here, as does Carmenere, Chile's flagship grape. Experimental and innovative producers are always seeking to develop new, cooler sites amongst the coastal areas and river valleys, resulting in plantings of Riesling and Viognier.

Cooler than the Maipo Valley to the north, Colchagua maintains a temperate Mediterranean climate. The valley is home to a diverse range of grapes: Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay are popular in the ocean-cooled western vineyards, while in the warmer eastern vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenere, Syrah and Merlot all take-up space. Colchagua is one of the two largest regions in the Central Valley, and varied topography and soils are found as a result. As with most wine regions the steeper slopes are the most desirable. The free-draining gravelly soils force the vines to grow their roots deep into the earth looking for moisture, which results in healthy vines that produce low yields of concentrated fruit. Known by many as a region with great potential, the wines from Colchagua certainly show class and the future is bright

From the lean, crisp wines of Chablis, to the exceptional dry Blancs de Blancs of Champagne and the buttery, rich, oaky wines of the warmer regions of California, Chardonnay wines exhibit a full spectrum of flavours and styles. As a fairly neutral grape, it is the land, soil, location, climate and winemaker that have the biggest impact on this famous grape.
