Bodegas Luis Cañas has been at the heart of Rioja since 1928, however, it wasn’t until 1970 when its contemporary story begins when they became the first Rioja Alavesa winemaker to bottle his young wine rather than sell it in bulk. This was a bold move at the time yet cemented their position as one of the most progressive in the region. Situated in Villabuena (Rioja Alavesa) and sheltered below the Sierra Cantabria, their vineyards are all old, small plots on chalky-clay soils, where Luis Cañas knows the local climate and terroir inside-out and demonstrates a real sense of pride and dedication of this to create these unique wines. So much so that every harvest Luis, now 86, stands at the head of the selection table keeping a keen eye on proceedings and guaranteeing only the very best parcels of grapes are used to create his excellent wines.

Famous for its wines made from a blend of red grapes dominated by Tempranillo and Garnacha, or Grenache, modern incarnations of Rioja are bright and laden with red-fruit character, underpinned by sweet spice and vanilla. The Cantabrian mountains to the north of the region protect the vineyards from the harsh Atlantic-derived weather, and Rioja enjoys a warm, dry climate. Most Rioja wines receive oak treatment, which gives them their signature vanilla and sweet spice flavours. The amount of time they age in oak defines their category. Rioja Joven wines receive little or no oak; while Rioja Crianza gets a minimum of one year in barrel followed by one year in bottle. Reserva wines get a year in oak and minimum two years in bottle while the region's finest wines, Rioja Gran Reserva, cannot be released until they have undergone five years ageing, two of which will be in oak.

Made in a range of styles, from sparkling to sweet, Viura`s versatility is provided by its moderate acidity and relative neutrality. The grape is mostly used to make mildly acidic, young white wines tending to be drank early or for blending with other varieties - in particular Malvasia and Garnacha Blanca in Rioja.
