Run by Mallory and Benjamin Talmard just outside the village of Uchizy, in the Maconnais appellation of Burgundy. The property runs to 25 hectares of vineyards on a gently sloping hillside largely facing the Saone River. The soils are predominantly chalky and the vineyard team uses straw to bring out the natural fertilisers in the soil. Their Macon Uchizy has a big following, and showcases the consistency of the estate.

Spanning 26,000 hectares of vineyards and over 3,000 individual producers across nearly 100 different appellations, unlocking the mysteries of Burgundy for your drinking enjoyment can require a sense of adventure, but getting to know a few villages and their style is a good way to start the journey. Burgundy is broken into six distinct areas. Just south of Dijon, the Cote de Beaune and Cote de Nuits make up the larger Cote d'Or, considered the beating heart of Burgundian production and the focus of the fine wine world. Vineyards are divided into tiny parcels, and some growers may only own a row or less of vines in the most esteemed sites. Chablis, in the north, is famous for its crisp whites, while south of the Cote d'Or Cote Chalonnaise and Maconnais offer great value. Propping up the Burgundy map is the large region of Beaujolais, the place to uncover juicy, fruity, unoaked Gamay wines. For our Fine Wine Burgundy selection go to Fine Wine where you can choose from a top wine selection from the renowned villages of Puligny Montrachet, Meursault, Nuit St Georges, Gevrey Chambertin, and many more top Burgundian appellations.

The region takes its name from the town of Macon, which has been a major crossroads since ancient times, with grape cultivation undertaken by the Celts and Romans. Like the regions further north the Maconnais relies on limestone soils to provide purity and clarity to its wines, and the region has vineyards scattered across its rolling hillsides. Chardonnay is the most widely cultivated grape in Maconnais, with the remaining production given to red wines made from the red grape Gamay, and Pinot Noir. Wines from the regional appellations can be very simple, but the quality is improving. There are 43 village appellations in Maconnais, and seeking wines with a Macon-Villages title on the label will add some quality insurance. The well-known appellations of Saint-Veran, Pouilly-Fuisse, Pouilly-Loche and Pouilly-Vinzelles provide a source of top quality, good value wines.

These wines are always white wines made from Chardonnay, and villages can add their names to the Macon title, for example, Macon-Uchizy or Macon-Lugny. They are also permitted to use the term Macon-Villages if desired. Many of the villages are to the west of the town of Macon, where the limestone rich hillsides provide a source of high-quality grapes, but there are also villages in the very north of the Maconnais. Warmer average temperatures than the rest of Burgundy and lower rainfall give excellent conditions for ripening Chardonnay grapes, and the wines are considerably richer and more fuller-bodied than the lean, mineral examples from Chablis in the far north of Burgundy. Macon-Villages wines have a broad palette of flavours due to their scattered geography, but typical examples include white flowers, honeysuckle, lemon verbena and orange citrus.
View more wines from this appellationProduced in wine regions across the world, Chardonnay is a white wine producing grape, and is made in many different styles. From the lean, crisp wines of Chablis, to the exceptional dry Blancs de Blancs of Champagne and the buttery, rich, oaky wines of the warmer regions of California, Chardonnay wines exhibit a full spectrum of flavours and styles. As a fairly neutral grape, it is the land, soil, location, climate and winemaker that have the biggest impact on this famous grape.
