Campbells

The Campbell family`s winemaking heritage began in 1870 when John Campbell, a plucky Scottish gold miner recently arrived from St Andrews, made his first wine from his `Bobbie Burns` vineyard in Rutherglen, in the Australian state of Victoria. It proved more successful than his mining career until the vineyard was devastated by phylloxera in the late 1800s. An intensive replanting programme didn`t gain traction until 1930. The family has continued to expand and develop and the approach to quality viticulture and winemaking by brothers Malcolm and Colin Campbell since the 1960s has seen Campbells grow to 64 hectares of vines and wines appreciated in the major markets of the world.

Victoria

By the end of the 1800s, Victoria was Australia's primary wine producer until production was eradicated by the dreaded vine disease phylloxera. Following extensive planting and re-planting over the past century, Victoria today is the most diverse wine region in Australia and probably the most exciting. In the north-east corner of the state producers in Rutherglen make some of the world's best fortified Muscat wines, while around Melbourne the Mornington Peninsula and Yarra Valley produce elegant Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from cool-climate vineyards. Further north the Great Western region is home to an Australian anomaly, sparkling Shiraz, while the Central Victoria regions of Heathcote, Bendigo and Goulburn Valley all deliver peppery, concentrated Shiraz wines. The huge variety of soils, climatic conditions and growing regions will see Victoria continue to diversify its output well into the future, with many producers looking to innovate further by experimenting with even more exotic varieties that suit their patch of dirt.

Rutherglen

Tucked into the north-east corner of Victoria, Rutherglen is one of the oldest wine regions in the state and is famous for its densely sticky fortified Muscats and Tokays. These aged wines made from the cumbersomely named Muscat Blanc a Petits Grains and Tokay, or Muscadelle, have been the backbone of Rutherglen's wine production since the 1800s. They gain their unique qualities following an extended period of ageing in old oak casks, which gives the wines complex treacle, butterscotch and sweet spice flavours alongside various other descriptors, including molasses, tea and cassis. The flat topography of Rutherglen, with its inland location and hot summers giving the region a distinctly continental climate, is not just about sweet wine. Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petite Sirah, or Durif, is also produced in the region, and a young, fresh-faced band of winemakers in Rutherglen and its southern neighbour Beechworth are bringing exciting ideas to the table as well.

Muscat

Muscat (Moscato in Italy, Moscatel in Spain) is the name given to an old and widespread family of grapes. Muscat grapes vary in colour and can range from white to almost black. Ironically it is one of the only varieties that produce wines that taste of grapes. Highly aromatic, Muscat can produce a range of wines from pale, bone-dry whites, through to golden-yellow, rich, sweet wines, and low-alcohol sparklers. Muscat grapes are widely grown, particularly in France, Italy, Spain and Australia.
