Weingut Markus Huber is based in the Traisental Valley, Austria’s youngest and smallest winegrowing region. Gruner Veltliner is king here, grown in over 60% of Traisental’s limestone-rich soils, however, Riesling also shines brightly. All estate vineyards are certified organic and Markus follows biodynamic practices, where he strives to create wines that convey their place with wonderful elegance, minerality, complexity and precision.

Like much of eastern Austria, the climate is influenced by the cool forests to the west and warm plains to the east. Warm days and cold nights help ripen the grapes while retaining acidity – vital aspects of the production of the Kamptal's signature grapes, Gruner Veltliner and Riesling. At the lower, flatter end of the region, the clay based soils produce concentrated, richly flavoured expressions of Gruner Veltliner, which comes loaded with typical flinty spice and citrus flavour. Upstream the precipitously steep slopes are dedicated to Riesling, which grows well on the stony topsoil, and produces clean mineral wines with a full range of vibrant green fruit flavours and lip-smacking acidity.

Riesling is an aromatic grape variety displaying clean fruit and floral aromas, with green apple, and layered citrus flavours. It can make great varietally pure wines across the spectrum, from steely bone-dry examples to unctuous, sweet dessert wines. Its high acidity allows some examples to be extensively aged, where they can develop great complexity.
