Pewsey Vale Vineyard was created in 1847 and was the first vineyard planted in Eden Valley. Sadly, the estate went through decades of neglect, yet was given a new lease of life in the 1960s when the Hill-Smith family purchased the estate. After many years of investment in both vineyards and cellar, Pewsey Vale sets the standard for quality Australian Riesling.

For all its size this is no bulk region, with many of Australia's finest wines produced in the state and most of the scientific research and development facilities located in and around Adelaide, the state capital. Bordered by the Great Australian Bight to the south, production is limited to the south-east corner of the state - it is simply too hot further north to produce wine capable grapes. There is a vast range of soils and growing conditions, thanks to topography and climate changes, and the state is capable of producing a broad spectrum of wines. Full-blooded Shiraz, bone-dry cool-climate Riesling, deep-fruited Cabernet Sauvignon, lusty Grenache, and brisk, elegant Adelaide Hills Chardonnay are just the tip of the iceberg.

Riesling is an aromatic grape variety displaying clean fruit and floral aromas, with green apple, and layered citrus flavours. It can make great varietally pure wines across the spectrum, from steely bone-dry examples to unctuous, sweet dessert wines. Its high acidity allows some examples to be extensively aged, where they can develop great complexity.
