Chateau Haut-Brion
Chateau Haut-Brion
Now surrounded by the urban sprawl south-west of the city of Bordeaux, Chateau Haut-Brion is the oldest wine estate in the region, dating back to 1533. Not content with being old and graceful, Haut-Brion has for centuries been making wines of the highest quality, and is one of the four wineries granted First Growth status in the 1855 classification. This is serious wine, and Haut-Brion is renowned for producing wines of extreme elegance, with poise, complexity and the most finely tuned balance. The 51 hectares of vineyards are riven with quartz and small stones which give Haut-Brion its distinctive silky character. Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon dominate the vineyard, but Haut-Brion also makes a tiny quantity of highly regarded white wine from Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon.
