Gerard Thomas has been in control of this Saint-Aubin estate since 1982 and is now helped by his two daughters, Isabelle and Anne. There are 12 hectares of vines, including a 1.82 hectare holding in the well-known Premier Cru Les Murgers de Dents de Chien. Gerard has been expanding the domaine in Cotes de Beaune since the 1980s through acquisitions in Chassagne and Puligny-Montrachet. Harvesting is by hand with careful handling of complete bunches to avoid oxidation and several passes through the vineyard during harvest to ensure optimum ripeness. All the whites are barrel fermented with 25% new oak used. Ten months in cask follows, with regular lees stirring to add depth. It is without doubt that Gerard Thomas is one of Saint-Aubin`s finest producers.

Spanning 26,000 hectares of vineyards and over 3,000 individual producers across nearly 100 different appellations, unlocking the mysteries of Burgundy for your drinking enjoyment can require a sense of adventure, but getting to know a few villages and their style is a good way to start the journey. Burgundy is broken into six distinct areas. Just south of Dijon, the Cote de Beaune and Cote de Nuits make up the larger Cote d'Or, considered the beating heart of Burgundian production and the focus of the fine wine world. Vineyards are divided into tiny parcels, and some growers may only own a row or less of vines in the most esteemed sites. Chablis, in the north, is famous for its crisp whites, while south of the Cote d'Or Cote Chalonnaise and Maconnais offer great value. Propping up the Burgundy map is the large region of Beaujolais, the place to uncover juicy, fruity, unoaked Gamay wines. For our Fine Wine Burgundy selection go to Fine Wine where you can choose from a top wine selection from the renowned villages of Puligny Montrachet, Meursault, Nuit St Georges, Gevrey Chambertin, and many more top Burgundian appellations.
View more wines from this regionNamed for the primary town in the area, Beaune, the Cote de Beaune is an important wine-producing area in Burgundy, France. As part of the larger Cote d'Or region, along with Cote de Nuits, the best wines of the Cote de Beaune are amongst the finest in the world, with prices to match. The Cotes d'Or escarpment is the region's spine, and the best vineyards lie on the slopes, with limestone-rich soils. Vineyard class and status is determined by the quality of these soils, based on over 100 years of classifications. The area has a continental climate, with warm days and very cool nights, and there is a danger of springtime frosts and hail damage - in 2013 70 percent of the crop was lost. Well known appellations in the Cote de Beaune include Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet, Volnay and Corton and there several Grand Cru and Premier Cru vineyards across the region. Outside of these smaller, premium growing areas, many vineyard sites have the regional Bourgogne appellation applied to them.
View more wines from this sub regionA jewel in the crown of Burgundy, Chassagne-Montrachet and its neighbour Puligny-Montrachet make some of the most celebrated Chardonnay in the world. Its aspect, which catches all-day sun and the incredibly pure clay-limestone soils provide optimal growing conditions, creating wines of great depth, complexity and structure. With three Grand Cru and 55 Premier Cru classified vineyards across just over 300 hectares of vineyard land, it is easy to see why the wines from Chassagne-Montrachet are so highly regarded. Chardonnay from Chassagne-Montrachet is opulent, well-rounded and powerful, with honeysuckle, nuts and toast. Ageing develops richer, honeyed flavours. Despite the Montrachet name's links with Chardonnay, roughly a third of Chassagne-Montrachet's vineyard area is Pinot Noir. Deep, broody red wines, with striking red fruit and herbal notes can age brilliantly, developing complexity and a savoury character.
View more wines from this appellationProduced in wine regions across the world, Chardonnay is a white wine producing grape, and is made in many different styles. From the lean, crisp wines of Chablis, to the exceptional dry Blancs de Blancs of Champagne and the buttery, rich, oaky wines of the warmer regions of California, Chardonnay wines exhibit a full spectrum of flavours and styles. As a fairly neutral grape, it is the land, soil, location, climate and winemaker that have the biggest impact on this famous grape.
