Loire Valley

A couple of hours drive south of Paris, and to the west of Burgundy, the wine region of the Loire Valley is one of the most diverse in France. The quality of Loire wine is often overlooked, but they can offer serious value and are renowned for their classy style and fresh flavours. Starting on the Atlantic Coast in the city of Nantes, the region winds its way 300 miles up the Loire River through green, rural land to the pretty villages of the Upper Loire. The scattered nature of the appellations of the Loire host a wide range of soils and climatic conditions for making wine. The climate is cool, and the wines typically have fresh acidity and clean, pure flavours. Appellations of note include Touraine, Sancerre, Muscadet, Pouilly-Fume and Saumur-Champigny. The Loire's 4000 wineries produce a diverse range of wines across all three colours alongside sparkling Cremant de Loire and golden, sticky sweet wines. Most famously, the Loire is known for white wines made from Sauvignon Blanc, Melon de Bourgogne and Chenin Blanc, while Cabernet Franc is the Loire's most famous red export.

Sancerre

A small appellation of the upper Loire Valley in France, Sancerre is famous for producing crisp, dry Sauvignon Blanc wines. The distinctive gooseberry and nettle aromas, with grassy citrus flavours and stony, flinty character make for some of the most easily recognisable wines in France. Located at the eastern end of the Loire Valley, hundreds of kilometres from the ocean, Sancerre is closer to Burgundy than to the other Loire regions in the west. Three soil types lay the foundations for the aromatic white wines of Sancerre: chalk, limestone-gravel and flint. These soils, combined with the cool climate create wines of intense purity and bracing acidity, and wines produced from grapes grown in the flinty soils often have a distinctive smoky character. Red wines, made from Pinot Noir and labelled as Sancerre Rouge are also produced in this far-flung region of the Loire but make up only a tiny percentage of the annual output.

Pinot Noir

Fickle to grow, tricky to make and often majestic to drink, Pinot Noir is the grape of Burgundy, and grown all over the world, most notably in Oregon, New Zealand and California. It is also one of the major blending grapes for Champagne. While the wines from the old world and new are undeniably different, Pinot Noir is a very distinctive variety and its wines reveal soft strawberry and cherry flavours with a heady aroma and often complex savoury characteristics when the grapes are placed in the right hands.
