Paul Pouderoux was a pioneer of Maury and a tireless defender of the legislation for A.O.C. Robert, his grandson and present owner of Domaine Pouderoux, is carrying on the tradition with a growing program close to nature, respecting the soil, biological diversity and the ecosystem. Alongside his wife Cathy, they produce delicious Vin Doux Naturel (natural sweet wines) of exceptional quality from this small family run winery in the heart of the Languedoc-Roussillon, such as Maury and Muscat de Rivesaltes.

Of these, wines granted the status of Indication Geographique Protegee (IGP) are the most important and include the regions of Ardeche, Languedoc-Roussillon and Cotes de Provence, France's best-known region for rose wines. Producers must meet strict conditions to hit the required quality standards, particularly around yields and minimum alcohol content. There are many excellent wines offering great value for money made under the IGP label and relaxed labelling laws allow winemakers to indicate the wine's grape variety on the bottle. Alongside the classic Chardonnay, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, varieties like Viognier, Grenache and Syrah are prominent. Despite a perception of inferior quality to AOC wines, this is not the case, as winemakers looking to work innovatively outside of their own strict AOC rules will label their wines as IGP.

Soft on the palate, with spice and red berry flavours, its lack of acidity and tannin sees it being used most frequently in blends typically with Tempranillo in Spain and Syrah and Cinsault in France. Grenache-based wines can develop complex, intense notes of blackcurrants, black cherries, and peppery spice in the right locations, and low yields tend to make better wines.
