Ernst Loosen is a German winemaker and owner of the wine producer Dr.Loosen, located just outside Bernkastel in the Mosel-Saar-Ruwer region of Germany. The estate has been in the same family for over 200 years and when Ernst assumed ownership in 1988, he realised that with ungrafted vines averageing 60 years old in some of Germany’s best vineyards, he had the raw materials to create outstanding, world-class wines. To achieve this, Ernst Loosen reduced his crop size significantly and stopped all chemical fertilisation, instead using organic fertilisers in moderation. Riesling are the only grapes grown at the estate, and the vineyards owe their excellent quality to three contributing factors. the regional climate of the Mosel area, the mineral rich slate and volcanic soils and the age of the estates ungrafted Riesling vines.
