Errazuriz

Vina Errazuriz was founded in 1870 by Don Maximiano Errazuriz, and the estate is now run by his descendent Eduardo Chadwick. He was a winemaking pioneer in the Aconagua Valley by planting the first French varietals in the region and bymaking the most of the alluvial soils and easy access to water to produce quality wine. The company is currently one of the best producers in Chile.

Aconcagua Valley

An hour's drive north of Santiago, the Aconcagua Valley takes its name from the river that runs through it, not from the giant 7000m peak in the Andes. Though traditionally an inland region, two newish coastal regions, Casablanca Valley and San Antonio Valley bring a new dimension to the region's offering. Much of the Aconcagua Valley is considered too hot for winemaking, but Don Maximiano Errazuriz took the plunge in the mid-1800s and planted vines in the region. Sena, a celebrated Bordeaux blend made by Vina Errazuriz, is still made there, proving that in the right locations too much heat is no barrier to success. Like many regions of Chile, the steep rise of the Andes frames the topography of Aconcagua, with vineyards in the west a mere 50 metres high while those in the east can reach 1000 metres above sea level. The cooler coastal regions produce excellent Sauvignon Blanc, and Chardonnay rounded out by pockets of Pinot Noir, Merlot and Syrah, while the eastern parts of the region are home to Cabernet Sauvignon and Carmenere.

Maipo Valley

The Maipo Valley is the spiritual home of Chilean wine and was planted early in Chile's vinous history, thanks to its proximity to the capital Santiago. Playfully known as the 'Bordeaux of South America', Maipo is home to some of Chile's most celebrated wines, particularly the expressive, vibrant style of Cabernet Sauvignon produced in the region. Protected from the Pacific coast by the Coastal Range and bordered to the east by the Andes Mountains, the vineyards of the Maipo Valley have varied topography, with the highest plots in the area of Alto Maipo producing the most prestigious wines. Rocky, free draining soils, and extended growing seasons produce concentrated fruit with good natural acidity. Lower down, the warmer sub-regions of Central Maipo and Maipo Bajo also produce Cabernet Sauvignon, but also include extensive plantings of Carmenere along with parcels of Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot and Chardonnay. Soils in Central Maipo are more fertile than those higher up leading to a simpler, vibrant style of wine.

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the world`s most widely recognised red grape varieties. It is grown in almost every major wine producing country and its wines are typically full-bodied and characterised by their high tannin content which provides structure, while supporting the rich, dark fruit flavours. With dominant dark-fruit aromas of blackcurrants, styles from various regions may also have flavours of eucalyptus, mint and tobacco. Its high tannin and acidity makes for excellent ageing potential.
