In the 1990’s Marchese Piero Antinori discovered the Haras de Pirque estate, a property then owned by the Matte family. In 2001, he started a joint venture with them to create Albis, the winery’s flagship wine, and helped to enhanced the quality of the estate-grown fruit through sustainable and organic vineyard practices. In 2017, the Antinori family acquired the whole property, determined to fully invest in this exciting new journey and created the Galantas Gran Reserva. Today, this brand is known for making one of the best Cabernet Sauvignon and Carmenere wines not only in Chile, but in the world. The wine estate is located in a scenic location known as Pirque, one of the heritage-rich places in the Maipo Valley. Located at the foothills of the Andes Mountains, this estate is blessed with excellent climate, soil quality, terroir conditions and altitudes to grow flavour-rich and intense fruits.

Made up of several sub-regions, including the Maipo Valley, Colchagua and the Casablanca Valley the region stretches for 400 kilometres from north to south and is home to some of the country's biggest producers. Its large size and variable topography present a broad range of climatic conditions, soils and styles. Vineyards are planted on coastal plains, in the foothills of the Andes and at rocky altitudes of up to 750 metres. As a result a diverse variety of grapes are planted across the region. Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Chardonnay all have homes here, as does Carmenere, Chile's flagship grape. Experimental and innovative producers are always seeking to develop new, cooler sites amongst the coastal areas and river valleys, resulting in plantings of Riesling and Viognier.

Playfully known as the 'Bordeaux of South America', Maipo is home to some of Chile's most celebrated wines, particularly the expressive, vibrant style of Cabernet Sauvignon produced in the region. Protected from the Pacific coast by the Coastal Range and bordered to the east by the Andes Mountains, the vineyards of the Maipo Valley have varied topography, with the highest plots in the area of Alto Maipo producing the most prestigious wines. Rocky, free draining soils, and extended growing seasons produce concentrated fruit with good natural acidity. Lower down, the warmer sub-regions of Central Maipo and Maipo Bajo also produce Cabernet Sauvignon, but also include extensive plantings of Carmenere along with parcels of Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot and Chardonnay. Soils in Central Maipo are more fertile than those higher up leading to a simpler, vibrant style of wine.

Well-blended red wines should make use of complementary varieties, that balance each other well. Cabernet Sauvignon often plays a major part, as does Syrah and Pinot Noir. Australia makes excellent wines from Grenache, Shiraz and Mataro, known as GSMs. Portuguese red blends typically rely on inky Touriga Nacional, and in Argentina, Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon are good friends.
