Louis Jadot

Founded in 1859, Louis Jadot is one of the most prestigious vignerons in all of Burgundy. The maison bears the name of its creator and has become one of the largest proprietors of Premier and Grand Cru vineyards in the region. Winemaking is now under the guidance of the talented Jacques Lardiere, who joined the company in 1970 and believes that his mission is to intervene with nature as little as possible. As a result, there have been no synthetic herbicides or fertilisers used for many years on the estate and they have also been trialling biodynamic viticultural practices on a small 14 hectare plot in and around Beaune. If deemed successful, the techniques will be implemented in other vineyards. Domaine Louis Jadot uphold the highest standards and have an unwavering stance when it comes to the quality of their wines, making them a very reliable source of Burgundy.

Burgundy

The illustrious wine region of Burgundy, home of the world's greatest Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, can be confusing for even experienced wine buffs. Spanning 26,000 hectares of vineyards and over 3,000 individual producers across nearly 100 different appellations, unlocking the mysteries of Burgundy for your drinking enjoyment can require a sense of adventure, but getting to know a few villages and their style is a good way to start the journey. Burgundy is broken into six distinct areas. Just south of Dijon, the Cote de Beaune and Cote de Nuits make up the larger Cote d'Or, considered the beating heart of Burgundian production and the focus of the fine wine world. Vineyards are divided into tiny parcels, and some growers may only own a row or less of vines in the most esteemed sites. Chablis, in the north, is famous for its crisp whites, while south of the Cote d'Or Cote Chalonnaise and Maconnais offer great value. Propping up the Burgundy map is the large region of Beaujolais, the place to uncover juicy, fruity, unoaked Gamay wines. For our Fine Wine Burgundy selection go to Fine Wine where you can choose from a top wine selection from the renowned villages of Puligny Montrachet, Meursault, Nuit St Georges, Gevrey Chambertin, and many more top Burgundian appellations.

Cote de Beaune

Named for the primary town in the area, Beaune, the Cote de Beaune is an important wine-producing area in Burgundy, France. As part of the larger Cote d'Or region, along with Cote de Nuits, the best wines of the Cote de Beaune are amongst the finest in the world, with prices to match. The Cotes d'Or escarpment is the region's spine, and the best vineyards lie on the slopes, with limestone-rich soils. Vineyard class and status is determined by the quality of these soils, based on over 100 years of classifications. The area has a continental climate, with warm days and very cool nights, and there is a danger of springtime frosts and hail damage - in 2013 70 percent of the crop was lost. Well known appellations in the Cote de Beaune include Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet, Volnay and Corton and there several Grand Cru and Premier Cru vineyards across the region. Outside of these smaller, premium growing areas, many vineyard sites have the regional Bourgogne appellation applied to them.

Pernand-Vergelesses

Located in the western lee of the famous hill of Corton, Pernand-Vergelesses is an appellation at the northern end of the Cote de Beaune region of Burgundy. Despite being located next to many highly regarded red wine vineyards, including the Grand Cru plots of Corton, the white wines of Pernand-Vergelesses are more celebrated due to their location on the western side of the hill, where the terroir produces clean, elegant, age-worthy Chardonnay. There are around 160 hectares of vines, split roughly in half between red and white grapes, and the vineyard area has eight Premier Cru climats. Chardonnay is typically light, lively and fresh, with a flinty mineral note, with some white flowers giving way to more honeyed, nutty flavours as it develops in the bottle. Pinot Noir from Pernand-Vergelesses is deep ruby, with bright red fruit and violet notes, developing spice and herbal character as it reaches maturity.

Chardonnay

Produced in wine regions across the world, Chardonnay is a white wine producing grape, and is made in many different styles. From the lean, crisp wines of Chablis, to the exceptional dry Blancs de Blancs of Champagne and the buttery, rich, oaky wines of the warmer regions of California, Chardonnay wines exhibit a full spectrum of flavours and styles. As a fairly neutral grape, it is the land, soil, location, climate and winemaker that have the biggest impact on this famous grape.
