Assyrtiko `Voila`, Lyrarakis, 2023

The Lyrarakis family discovered the quality potential East Crete had to offer in the early 1970` and originally planted on the “Vo´ila” plain and subsequently extending into the surrounding area they have developed exceptional vineyards where superb grape variety Assyrtiko thrives. Vóila Assyrtiko displays complex aromas of citrus and white fleshed fruits with subtle hints of ginger thanks to the fully ripe grapes that give this wine a crisp, clean and linear mouthfeel with a mineral and chalky character.

Charming aromas of lemon, peach, and apricot with a touch of quince spice. Vibrant and bright on the palate with racy, clean acidity that fuses with further citrus and white stone fruit with dashes of white pepper spice on the long, linear finish.

Deep stony citrus aroma with a hint of lime and fresh green fruit. Much more obvious skin-derived texture here than in the 2021 vintage, a fine tannic grip that is a great foil to the fruit and high acidity. A distinctive style with a persistent citrusy/herbal finish, persistent thanks to the texture, more complex and attention-grabbing but not showy. Really long and beautifully crisp without being out of balance. Direct, pure and textured. Drink 2024-2028. 17/20 points. Julia Harding MW, jancisrobinson.com, May 2024
