Born in Prussia in 1823, Ludwig Mentzendorff joined his family merchant business in the Russian city of Riga, now Latvia`s capital in the 1840s, and in 1850 he was approached by a nearby distillery owner to represent his Kummel liqueur in Great Britain, under the Mentzendorff name. He began selling his Kummel in London in 1851, and in 1858 be began representing Bolinger Champagne in the UK. Now over 150 years old the Mentzendorff company continues to hold the Bollinger agency, alongside several other prestigious brands, and ,of course, the eponymous Kummel liqueur that started it all.
