Joseph Pascal

Domaine Joseph Pascal is a true family affair as the Domaine started in the 1950s when Jean Pascal (who worked at Domaine Leflaive at the time) started buying up parcels of land with his wife Céline. Later in 1970s, their son Jean-Luc joined them and formed Domaine Jean Pascal et Fils, followed by their son, Jean-Luc, and his wife Alexandra in the early 2000s. Fast-forward to 2023 and the Pascal estate is now named after the next generation. Joseph Pascal. Their 15-hectares of vines makes them one of the larger properties in the appellation, however, there is no compromise on quality with all the crop now being vinified and bottled at the Domaine. All wines are barrel fermented with the casks being supplied by four local tonnelleries; Berthomieu, Montgillet, Meyrieux, and Rousseau.

Burgundy

The illustrious wine region of Burgundy, home of the world's greatest Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, can be confusing for even experienced wine buffs. Spanning 26,000 hectares of vineyards and over 3,000 individual producers across nearly 100 different appellations, unlocking the mysteries of Burgundy for your drinking enjoyment can require a sense of adventure, but getting to know a few villages and their style is a good way to start the journey. Burgundy is broken into six distinct areas. Just south of Dijon, the Cote de Beaune and Cote de Nuits make up the larger Cote d'Or, considered the beating heart of Burgundian production and the focus of the fine wine world. Vineyards are divided into tiny parcels, and some growers may only own a row or less of vines in the most esteemed sites. Chablis, in the north, is famous for its crisp whites, while south of the Cote d'Or Cote Chalonnaise and Maconnais offer great value. Propping up the Burgundy map is the large region of Beaujolais, the place to uncover juicy, fruity, unoaked Gamay wines. For our Fine Wine Burgundy selection go to Fine Wine where you can choose from a top wine selection from the renowned villages of Puligny Montrachet, Meursault, Nuit St Georges, Gevrey Chambertin, and many more top Burgundian appellations.

Cote de Beaune

Named for the primary town in the area, Beaune, the Cote de Beaune is an important wine-producing area in Burgundy, France. As part of the larger Cote d'Or region, along with Cote de Nuits, the best wines of the Cote de Beaune are amongst the finest in the world, with prices to match. The Cotes d'Or escarpment is the region's spine, and the best vineyards lie on the slopes, with limestone-rich soils. Vineyard class and status is determined by the quality of these soils, based on over 100 years of classifications. The area has a continental climate, with warm days and very cool nights, and there is a danger of springtime frosts and hail damage - in 2013 70 percent of the crop was lost. Well known appellations in the Cote de Beaune include Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet, Volnay and Corton and there several Grand Cru and Premier Cru vineyards across the region. Outside of these smaller, premium growing areas, many vineyard sites have the regional Bourgogne appellation applied to them.

Puligny-Montrachet

An appellation of Burgundy's Cote de Beaune region sandwiched between Chassagne-Montrachet and Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet is renowned for producing some of the best white wines on the planet. There are four Grand Crus within the village boundaries, and the finest of these, Le Montrachet, was appended to the village of Puligny in 1879, giving the appellation its modern day double-barrelled name. Plots with an easterly exposure, pure limestone–clay soils and altitudes of around 225 metres combine to provide optimum growing conditions for grapes. The Chardonnay from this famous appellation is typically bright gold, with complex mineral flavours of hazelnut, marzipan and green apple. Time develops these wines into rich, buttery, honeyed wines that show incredible depth and sophistication. The top wines of Puligny-Montrachet may be eye-wateringly expensive, but in the best years, they bring many die-hard Chardonnay fans to tears.

Chardonnay

Produced in wine regions across the world, Chardonnay is a white wine producing grape, and is made in many different styles. From the lean, crisp wines of Chablis, to the exceptional dry Blancs de Blancs of Champagne and the buttery, rich, oaky wines of the warmer regions of California, Chardonnay wines exhibit a full spectrum of flavours and styles. As a fairly neutral grape, it is the land, soil, location, climate and winemaker that have the biggest impact on this famous grape.
