Rhone

The area is split into 2 parts that make very different wines; The Northern Rhone and the Southern Rhone, both parts are affected by the strong cold wind known as the mistral that blows intermittently throughout the region keeping the vineyards clear of mold, mildew, pests and frosts but sometimes causing damage to the vines. The Northern Rhone is smaller and has a continental climate with warm days and cool nights. The best vineyards are situated on the steep river banks of the Rhone river and produce complex, age worthy, terroir driven wines from single varietal Syrah. The most notable wines come from Cote Rotie, Hermitage and Cornas. Although the production is mostly red wine, there is excellent single varietal Viognier (Condrieu) produced as well as Marsanne and Roussanne blends. The Southern Rhone is vastly different, the valley flattens out and there is a huge range of terroir producing a range of different styles. The climate is hot and dry which yields ripe, fruit driven wines. There are numerous wines produced under various appellations from simple Cotes du Rhone (The grapes can come from anywhere in the Rhone) which is medium bodied wine with red fruit and spice character, Cotes du Rhone Villages which has a higher level of concentration and complexity. The 9 Cru Villages produce the best quality wines in the Southern Rhone, the most famous of these villages are Chateauneuf du Pape, Gigondas and Vacqueyras which are rich and full bodied with high alcohol levels. Several grape varieties are permitted and the wines are mostly blends that are dominated by Grenache with Syrah, Mourvedre and Cinsault playing supporting roles. A small percentage of white wine is produced from Grenache Blanc, Clairette, Roussanne, Marsanne, Viognier and Clairette.

Southern Rhone

Part of the larger Rhone Valley wine region, the southern Rhone is separated from the northern Rhone by the 45th parallel and its vineyards fan out across the landscape as the region moves south, following the Rhone River towards the Mediterranean Sea. The climate is Mediterranean and the rugged landscape creates different mesoclimates, aiding production of a diverse range of grapes. If the northern Rhone is about quality, the southern Rhone takes a more quantitative approach to its wines and is a significant producer of good-quality, value wines for everyday consumption in both France and across its export markets. Much of this wine is labelled as Cotes du Rhone, an appellation title which is applied to a large quantity of the region's output and provides both entry-level quaffers and age-worthy, top-quality fine wines. Some individually named appellations exist including Chateauneuf-du-Pape, Vacqueyras, Gigondas and Beaumes-de-Venise.

Chateauneuf-du-Pape

The 'King of the Southern Rhone', Chateauneuf-du-Pape is both prolific in its output and acclaimed for the quality of its rich, intensely fruited red and white blended wines. Located between the towns of Avignon and Orange, Grenache dominates the vineyards, and this grape performs better in Chateauneuf-du-Pape than anywhere else in France. Despite the red blends having fourteen permissible varieties, most are only bit players and the ever-present Grenache is most often joined by Syrah and Mourvedre, which add a lick of spice, structure and silky texture to the finished wines. Positioned next to the Rhone River, the soils of Chateauneuf-du-Pape are known for the galets roules, small, round rocks that reflect heat back up onto the vines, increasing ripeness and reducing acidity. Red wines dominate the production of Chateauneuf-du-Pape, but the small volume of white wines, from a blend of ten permitted grape varieties, grows in popularity with each vintage.

Southern Rhone Red Blend

Southern Rhone Red refers to a broad group of grape varieties used in the wines of the southern Rhone in France. Many different grapes can be included, but typically wines will be made from a blend of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre, with Grenache and Syrah the dominant partners. Other examples include Cinsault, Carignan and Clairette. The well-known appellation of Chateauneuf-du-Pape allows up to 13 different varieties to be used in its blends, but Grenache and Syrah dominate these wines as well.
